A member asked:

Other than half life and peak times how do klonopin (clonazepam) and ativan actually differ? can klonopin (clonazepam) be used also as a mood stabilizer as in other countries

Sedation: In my experience, Ativan tends to be more sedating than klonopin (clonazepam). As far as mood stabilizer, I have not tried Klonopin (clonazepam) for that, but it is used for seizures, as are most other mood stabilizers, so it makes sense that it could be effective.

No evidence: I looked online and could find no evidence that Klonopin (clonazepam) can act as a mood stabilizer. I have a practice of about 800 outpatients. A large number of them are bipolar with a variety of anxiety disorders comorbidly. I also do not shy away from high doses when necessary. I don't believe that i've ever seen a mood stabilizing effect from klonopin (clonazepam). I do believe that there've been a few times that I have seen klonopin (clonazepam)have more of a depressing effect on the mood if anything. Best wishes.
