Dry eye: Some people sleep with the eyes open or partially open. A fan blowing exaggerates the drying effect. It is normal to be hungry after a nap. If the dryness persists after blinking a few minutes, one can splash clean water on the eyes or use an artificial tear drop. Some dry eye is associated with an autoimmune or rheumatologic condition, so if symptoms are severe or persistent, see an eye md.

Normal: Waking up with dry eyes is common in healthy people. If you have problems with dry eyes during the day or feel like you have sand in your eyes, could have dry eye syndrome. Small percentage of people with dry eye syndrome may have sjögren's syndrome particularly if your mouth always seems dry. See your eye doctor and get an eye exam. Also discuss with your primary care doc if having other symptoms.
