Dry socket: A dry socket is the result of an extraction site not forming a clot, and is extremely painful. This will happen within 1-2 days after the extraction. If you have had no serious pain for a week, then you do not have a dry socket. If you are having discomfort a week after an extraction, return to your surgeon to have the area examined.

Yes, it is possible: It is possible to develop a dry socket after one week, but it is on the late side. See your surgeon/dentist for post-op eval.

Yes: Unfortunately, rejection of the blood clot causes a dry socket. Any thing that loosens a clot can recur, but this is uncommon.

Not really: It is either healing normally or not. You either have a dry socket or you don't, although there are degrees of pain, different pain thresholds, etc.

For how long is it possible for me to get a dry socket?

Dry Socket: Generally develops in the first 24-48 hours after the extraction. If you follow all the PO instructions you should not have a problem. As the socket matures and heals you will need to continue rinsing as the socket heals from the bottom up and if food gets trapped it can be uncomfortable. check with your dentist to be sure.

Unlikely: Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) would be unusual if you had no pain after the extraction. If you had it it may last that long but this is not common. If you are having problems please see the surgeon who preformed the procedure.
