A member asked:

Will an overactive thyroid make you go blind?

Graves' disease: An overactive thyroid can cause graves' disease. This is a condition associated with swelling of the tissues that surround your eyes, leading to eyelid retraction ("bug eyes"). If severe enough, this can cause significant eye irritation, double vision and redness. In severe cases, the swelling can damage the optic nerve and cause major visual loss. This needs to be followed by your eye doctor.

Very unlikely: Graves' disease is the most common of several causes of hyperthyroidism. It can be associated with inflammation around the eyes, but this is usually mild-moderate and poses no threat to vision. Rarely, the inflammation can interfere with blood flow to the eyes which could lead to blindness. Fortunately this is extremely rare. Ask your doctor if you should see an ophthalmologist (eye specialist).
