Rule out infection: You have to be more specific. The elbow has at least 3 bony prominences. Generally speaking, in your age group most elbow pain over the bony parts of the elbow will be caused by bursitis or tendinitis. Both conditions respond to rest, local heat and anti-inflamatories. The main pathology you want to rule out is infection either inside to outside the elbow joint. To do this, please see your doctor.

Probably epicondylit: Hard to tell without more information, but it is probably lateral epicondylitis/tennis elbow. This is a tendon problem and can usually be treated without surgery by wearing a tennis elbow strap, using ice packs, anti-inflammatories and stretching exercises or therapy. You can make the diagnosis by bending your wrist backward with your own muscles. If it causes elbow pain, it is probably tennis elb.
