Back arthritis?: How old are you? If over 40, arthritis is a strong possibility. It causes degeneration of the facet joints, and degeneration of the disks. It causes referred pain to the back. In rare cases, it can be caused by fractures, or worse things such as infections or tumors. Not to alarm you, but if the pain is severe, please get evaluated by a physician.
