A member asked:

Is there such a thing as a painless mammogram for big chested women who find a regular mammogram to be painful?

Depends...: Usually for larger breasts, larger platforms are used during the mammogram. Since the breast still has to be compressed considerably, the pain may still be a factor - it just depends.

Minor discomfort: Mammograms are uncomfortable for all women for a few seconds. If you normally have painful breasts then an over the counter pain med (tylenol (acetaminophen) or advil) can be taken 1 hour before your mammogram appointment to help with the discomfort. Mammograms are live saving so please do not skip it!

Mammogram: Some facilities use special disposable pads to decrease discomfort, and some mammography units have been engineered to attempt to decrease discomfort....for example instead of the compression paddle having a straight edge that might pinch, it has a curved or rolled edge. Call the facilities in your area to see if any have these, it might help.
