Could be: You might have felt yourself ovulating. There might have been a little bleeding at the time of ovulation which caused some irritation. If this becomes recurrent or more severe you might be evaluated with an ultrasound to check for cysts or evidence of endometriosis.

Pain: You've asked an interesting question. There a few ways to try to figure out if you're ovulating. Of course pregnancies the only way to know for sure. First of all, a woman usually ovulates 14 days before her next menstrual cycle. Secondly you can look for cervical mucus which should be clear and sticky around ovulation time. You can also try and see if you have a positive ovulation result on a home ovulation predictor kit. If the pain is ovulatory it should be fairly consistent from month-to-month.
