Are there risks with a 131-i-mibg scan?

Risks...: As with most nuclear medicine studies there is some radiation exposure. Usually the thyroid is blocked for mibg scan to limit radiation exposure to the thyroid. Mibg scanning usually requires you to stop some medications before the scan...Check with your doctor. Adverse effects of mibg include tachycardia, pallor, vomiting, and abdominal pain but are rare.

Tumor evaluation: Mibg scintigraphy images tumours of neuroendocrine origin, particularly of neuro-ectodermal (pheochromocytomas, paragangliomas and neuroblastomas) , although other neuroendocrine tumours (carcinoids, medullary thyroid carcinoma. Can also be visualized. Radiation from i131 mibg is greater than imaging with i123 mibg. Resolution on latter images is considered better.
