No. : Ultrasound mapping is most commonly used. The reason to do an mr venogram is to look for causes of deep system compression which can mimic superficial vein disease or cause varicose veins otherwise. Most physicians check for DVT using ultrasound a few days after the procedure.

Not needed: It is not necessary to map the deep veins by MRI before saphenous vein ablation. It is usually done by ultrasound before the procedure. If you have questions, why not ask your treating physician?

Evaluation for VV: The gold standard for the evaluation of varicose veins is a thorough history and physical exam followed by a venous duplex examination which will look at both the superficial and deep venous systems. This combination should be adequate the the overwhelming of patients to evaluate the status of their veins. Only unusual vein symptoms would require further testing.
