A member asked:

Is it possible for thalassemia to show up for the first time when you're 18 years old?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Some of the minor thalassemias are quite compatible with a normal lifestyle & functioning. Common thal minor often presents as slight anemia that doesn't respond to iron supplements. But if the index of suspicion is not high, further testing may not be done. Many cases are picked up on tests done for another issue or as part of a thorough checkup.
