A member asked:

If you're taking the yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) pill while on antibiotics does this mean the pill stops working or is it just less reliable?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Reduce Effectiveness: Certain antibiotics like penicillins(eg ampicillin), tetracyclines (eg, doxycycline) may decrease the effectiveness of yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) thus increasing the risk of pregnancy/ breakthrough bleeding. Talk with your doctor/pharmacist to identify if the antibiotic is in one of these classes. If so use extra protection like condoms if the antibiotic choice cannot be changed.Take care/ practice safe sex. Use condoms.
