Glutamate dysfxn: A catatonic state can occur in severe cases of psychosis, mania or depression. A person can be stuporous or assume new positions when passively moved. The person could also be severely agitated or excited. An excess of glutamate which is an excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain has been proposed as a mechanism. Benzodiazepines which inhibit brain activity and ECT have been used as treatment.
