One pound equals 3500 calories, so if you burn up 250 calories a day that you don't take in, you'll generally lost about 1/2 pound/week -- which is a good rate if you can sustain it. You can't lose it all at once, you need to find a diet and exercise regimen you can live with the rest of your life. 3 smaller, well balanced meals/day and no snacking.
