Two test types: There's an antibody test for herpes (hsv-2 igg), but it only tells you whether you have herpes in your body; it doesn't tell you whether a skin or genital lesion is due to herpes. For that you need a viral culture or pcr from a fresh lesion. We generally treat based on symptoms, not based on antibody status, so the antibody test is not widely used.
