varies: That's a tough question to answer because everyone is different. An untreated UTI can ascend the ureters and involved the kidneys (pyelonephritis). This untreated can lead to sepsis (infection spread into blood). Timing can depend on many things such as anatomy, organisms involved as well as time that antibiotics are initiated.

UTI: The surest way to know if you have a urinary tract infection is to have your urine checked. There are urine dipsticks that can detect infection. The symptoms of a UTI can include painful urination, feeling like you have to urinate often, but only passing a very small amount of urine, and urgently feeling like you have to urinate. It can get worse from there. See a doctor if you have symptoms.

Repeat urine test: After a UTI, it is always a good idea to check another urine sample after treatment to ensure that there is no evidence of continued infection. If you have had recurrent infections then a more detailed examination including imaging of the kidneys to rule out anatomic abnormalities, a cystoscopy to assess the bladder and urethra, and ultrasound of the bladder to ensure emptying may be done.
