Common: Generally, there are two types of septal defect. Ventricular septal defect, which is almost always diagnosed in the first year of life, or atrial septal defect (asd), which is often diagnosed in childhood, but also often diagnosed in adulthood. The signs of ASD are often subtle, particularly in childhood. In fact, some children with an ASD have a completely normal examination.
