Different Mechanisms: Both are osmotic laxatives that increase fluid secretion and GI motility. Both are indicated for chronic constipation and ibs with constipation. Amitiza (lubiprostone) and Linzess act on different sites in the gut wall. Linzess is indicated once daily and Amitiza (lubiprostone) twice. Take lizness before food and Amitiza (lubiprostone) with food. Common concerns: amitiza- nausea (food helps) and chest tightness, linzess- diarrhea.

Dose of Amitiza (lubiprostone) may need adjustment in presence of liver disease. Given these factors, it is prescribing doc's preference.
