Yes, No, unknown but: Compact fluorescent bulb do contain mercury but mercury does not escape unless they are broken. It is not known if mercury causes cancer but it causes other serious problems. But mercury in the bulbs cause cancer-causing uv rays to be emitted from them. They're energy efficient but many react to the type of light emitted. Led's are a better choice.
