It can be: Diarrhea can occur from inflammation of the bowel due to a number of irritants. Causes can include virus, bacteria and even toxins produced by microorganisms. Since the bowel is lined with a mucous membrane irritation/inflammation can lead to increased mucous that will show up with diarrhea. About half of thoes with irritable bowel syndrome have mucous with diarrhea.
