Marrow RBC expansion: Iron is a critical, rate limiting substrate in red blood cell (rbc) production in the bone marrow. Expansion of bone marrow cells/elements likely activates myelinated and unmyelinated sensory neurons. Similar pain can be seen with administration of (some, but not all) chemokines that stimulate the production of progenitor cells(eg g-csf for neutrophils).
