Mostly on their own: For most patients their own immune system will clear the infection. Antivirals like tamiflu (oseltamivir) help. Some patients like those who are pregnant or with asthma can develop a life-threatening case. Most important is prevention by getting vaccinated.

Hospitalization: A person infected with the bird flu is likely to be sick enough to be admitted to the hospital for care. One is not likely to get rid of bird flu with over the counter medications.
