Ultrasound: The term describes the sonographic characteristics of the kidney tissue. When the cortical echogenicity is increased the kidney looks brighter. This is a finding usually associated with various chronic renal parenchymal disease. When decreased can represent swelling from acute infection or renal vein obstruction.
