Yes: Maternal contribution to the offspring is limited to her female sex chromosome. Since a pair of x's make her female, that is all she can put into an egg. A male has an x and a y chromosome, so ~half his sperm carry an x and half carry a y. At fertilization the mothers x joins dad's x or y and a girl or boy will result.
