Osteoporosis risks: Yes, men can get osteoporosis. Most men have an advantage because they have a higher bone density then women to start so they usually develop osteoporosis later in life. It occurs more often in men who have low testosterone and low intake of calcium or who are on chronic steroid use or other medications to prevent rejection of a transplanted organ.
Dr. Chad Boomershine

YES!: Yes, men can get osteoporosis. Men at increased risk are those who have been treated with certain medicines including steroids (prednisone) or medicines to treat prostate problems or cancer. Thin men or men with a family history are also at risk. Men can have the same testing as women to determine if they have osteoporosis, it is a simple xray test called a bone density or DEXA scan. Get tested!

Can old men get osteoporosis?

Dr. PHILIP WALLER
Rheumatology 33 years experience
Definitely: Osteoporosis is not simply a disease of women. As men age and we are talking 60s and not just old men, osteoprosis does occur. Unfortunately, we still do not do enough bone densities on men because we think its a women's disease. In fact as people get older and now we talking 70s and 80s the complication rates following hip fractures are more common and typically more serious then women.

Yes: Men definitely get osteoporosis. In healthy men, by the age of 65 and older the incidence of osteoporosis is essentially the same as a woman. In fact as men age they develop a higher death rate following hip fractures then women. Men need bone density testing also.

Yes: The old pennsylvania dutch adage is true: "we grow too soon old and too late smart." we are generally more impulsive when we're young, and males are generally more impulsive than females. Women are more cautious and more apt to stop something before it becomes habitual (other than shoes, of course).
