Bacteria: Hpf stands for "high power field" and refers to the area seen under a high power microscope in one field. If you can see a single bacteria in this field it means that there are at least 10, 000 bacteria per milliliter in the fluid being examined (generally urine). The usual standard for diagnosis of UTI on a single specimen is >1000, 000/ml, but this can vary.
