What causes ear pain that travels down the neck area?

This is called ...: Referred pain. The pain centers in the throat and ear and TMJ are close enough that disease in one area can produce pain in the others. Ear pain does not usually refer to the throat however, it usually the other way. Some one with tonsillitis or a cancer in the throat will often complain of ear pain.
