Often cruel: If the parents try to prevent junior from becoming americanized, they will make both themselves and their child miserable. There can be much good (particularly gratitude and a work ethic) and much bad (up to total rejection of a child who chooses american-style self-determination). A kid who is not allowed to americanize will be rejected and ridiculed by his us peers. Be warned.
