Both: Hives or urticaria can be the result of drug reactions, allergies, or hereditary . You should probably see a dermatologist if they persist.

Hives: When hives are caused by a drug, the mechanism is usually an allergic reaction. We generally would consider a hive reaction to be allergy rather than side effect.
