Why do corticosteroid creams say on the label "not for ophthalmic use"?

Can cause problems: Topical steroid creams are not fomulatted for use in the eye. If a topical steroid is needed then your physician should be able to prescribe an appropriate ophthalmic steroid.

Not for eyes: There are specific medications that are evaluated for use in the eyes. Opthalmic use means the eyes. Eye medications need specific contents, a certain prescription dose of corticosteroids and contents that do not injure the eye. Corticosteroids creams are not manufactered to be safe to use in the eyes and that is why the label says "not for ophthalmic use".
