See below: Two periods in a month may be perfectly normal depending upon the space between the periods. It may also represent break through bleeding which may be normal as well. This is hormonal bleeding and depending upon the age of the woman may be normal.

Abnormal bleeding: May be due to a variety of things, infection, irregular ovulation, uterine fibroids or polyps just to name a few. Its likely not a concern but if having unprotected intercourse and having pain you may consider getting tested for a cervical infection. The birth control pill, if its a recurrent issue, will provide relief.
