Long time: Ankle fractures or ankle sprains can take several months and even up to a year to resolve all of the swelling. They need several weeks of immobilization in either a cast or walking boot. Icing and elevation usually help.

Many possibilities: Swelling may last a long time following a foot or ankle injury. An x-ray can show if there is an underlying fracture. You may have a soft tissue injury if it is just a sprain and may have damaged the muscle, tendon, or ligaments in the area. Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.

Ankle sprain swellin: After an ankle sprain the ligaments and muscles can be injured. If the sprain is treated initially with rest, ice, compression, and elevation, then you can limit the post injury swelling. Typically this will take 6 weeks and can be up to 3 months. Physical therapy and icing can reduce the time of the swelling.
