Antihistamines: There are several newer antihistamines that are now over the counter.  They all are about the same.  Allegra, zyrtec and Claritin (loratadine) to name a few.  Try these at suggested dosage.  If they don't work, see your doctor.

Claritin (loratadine): we always recommend to avoid meds if possible, but if you have to Claritin (loratadine) should be ok

Vistaril (hydroxyzine): Vistaril (hydroxyzine) has a lot of sedation as it's side effect. It may be wiser  for you to not use the vistaril (hydroxyzine) and use the zyrtec since it should not cause any sedation during the day.

Do not increase : A 17 month old should not have allergies to inhaled items like dust or pollen.  Zyrtec (cetirizine) could cause drowsiness and i would avoid long term use of zyrtec (cetirizine) in your child.  If your child has a runny or stuffy nose that is unresponsive to zyrtec (cetirizine) then see your doctor to make sure there isn't an infection brewing.

Yes: Zyrtec (cetirizine) is class b. It means that it has been proven through research that is does not cause any fetal harm.

Zyrtec (cetirizine): antihistamine OTC. The maximum recommended dose of Zyrtec (cetirizine) is 10mg per day. The interesting fact that studies have been shown that there is no advantage between 10 mg to the 20 mg dose of Zyrtec (cetirizine).  Talk to your dermatologist for more information.Hope it helps.

Not appropriate: Airborn, vitamins and aspirin are not appropriate treatments for allergies. If you are taking the Zyrtec regularly and still having daily symptoms, then see doctor for treatment with prescription medications including possible intranasal sprays or other oral medication such as Singulair (montelukast). If you know what allergic to, avoidance is also important.

Depends: Depends what your allergy symptoms are. If nasal symptoms, 2 otc nasal sprays - nasacort (triamcinolone) and Nasalcrom would likely help. Some get relief from nasal lavage - kit available at pharmacy.
