No problem: At higher doses, for allergic rhinitis, you don't get much better effects. For chronic hives, higher doses of antihistamines can sometimes give better results.

Loratadine is weaker: When loradine (claritin) was studied the manufacturer selected the lowest dose that gave a response better than placebo but didn't have more side effects than placebo.  This caused it to be a fairly weakly effective med.  As it wasn't studied at higher dose i can't speak to safety of higher doses.  Personally, i find zyrtec (cetirizine) to be much more effective but may be more sedating.

Antihistamines: Zyrtec & Claritin (loratadine) are both antihistamines & are of the same generation...They are supposed to be non-sedating.  You should not give your child both of these medicines at the same time.  They could be given on consecutive days, though, if you weren't sure which one works best.  Give zyrtec one day & then give Claritin (loratadine) the next.  This would be an acceptable alternative.  Don't give both at same time.

Not necessary: Both Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec are considered new generation antihistamines and have the same effects.  If a person accidentally took these at the same time, there is likely no adverse effect, but there is really no need to take both for treatment of symptoms.  If symptoms of allergies are not controlled, see an allergist for a better treatment plan.

Not the Standard: Hi,
Not really Zyrtec tablets and Claritin are usually once a day meds.  They are 2 different antihistamines.  Claritin does come in a 12 hour form. So you would take one in the am and one in the pm.
Certainly you could use both antihistamines but it is not usually the standard of care.

Both antihistamines: Both Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec are antihistamines. Each should last 24 hours for control  of allergic rhinitis symptoms. However, some patients have more severe symptoms or may be using antihistamines for reasons other than allergic rhinitis and may require more frequent dosing of antihistamines  including using Claritin (loratadine) and zyrtec same day. Recommend this be done under allergist supervision.
