does zyrtec take the place of benadryl? i have alpha gal and if i feel a reaction starting i take benadryl so i am now taking zyrtec so does that help if i am having an alpha gal reaction?

: If you have alpha gal allergy and delay anaphylaxis after eating meat, yes you could use Zyrtec if the symptoms are mild the same with Benadryl. But you should have an EpiPen because when more than one organ is involved an antihistamine alone is not sufficient. Check with your allergist!!

: If you are not sleepy from the Zyrtec you can take a Benadryl later, and the opposite is true as well.

Be sure to avoid other possible causes of respiratory tract symptoms/irritation, in addition to the suspected allergen: no smoke of any kind (including candles), aerosols, and fragrances, which are bad for us all generally, see:

Good that you asked: as you want to exercise caution with multiple medications, Zyrtec and Benadryl are both antihistamines with similar actions, combined together, you might get more of the side effects, you want to stay with only one of them. You can start with the lowest dose of Benadryl though and increase as needed, read the labels, if no improvement, see / call your doctor, avoid driving for now, wish you well

Depends on : It is not quite clear whether child was diagnosed as having 'allergies' to account for cough and other symptoms. If so, he/she should be given only 2.5 mg of Zyrtec (long acting antihistamine) once a day.  Over-The-Counter med such as Delsym is not proven effective for 'cold' or 'allergies.'
