Albendazole: Albendazole is utilized worldwide against worm infestation. However, i is more common is usa to use mebendazole. Side effects of both include dizziness, nausea, emesis, liver dysfunction, and more dangerous is aplastic anemia. Blood count levels need to be monitored.

Secondary med: Current reccomendations list Praziquantel at 5-10 mg/kg x 1 dose as the preferred agent for tapeworm due to effectiveness & simplicity of treatment. Albendazole at a dose of 15mg/kg divided 2x/day for 1-6 mo may be effective but is certainly a harder rx to complete. See harriet lane handbook of pediatric antimicrobial therapy.

Depends on the worm: Different types of worms have different recommended dosing schedules for albendazole. Dosing can range from 1 day (for pinworms) to several weeks for other parasites (sometimes several months). A single dose starts working in a few hours. The reported half-life for a single dose is 8-12 hours, which means after 8-12 hours, half the medicine is gone from the body, or has been made non-active.

my gp prescribed a single dose of zentel 400mg. i only realised after taking it that it is not advised while breastfeeding.  my boy is 21 months though. can i continue breastfeeding or do i stop and for how long?

Continue: There is not a lot of data about use in breastfeeding but the main issue for exclusion is during pregnancy. Transfer in breast milk is about 5%. Since it is sometimes used to treat toddlers I do not consider it a risk for you situation.

Which one: There are in excess of a thousand members of the nematode family, many of which can infect humans. The proper treatment would require identification of the specific worm. One is quite sensitive to this med &amp; a single dose may kill it. Discuss with MD: Hard to know, the medication is used to treat hydatid disease and other infections caused by tapeworms. May also be used to treat infections caused by roundworms, hookworms, and pinworms. Belongs to a class of drugs called anthelmintics. All of these infections can cause itching and flaking,  pads and toilet paper can cause extra irritation. Try using moist wipes for hygiene until treatment finish.

i was diagnosed w/pinworm, about 10 days ago i took my first dose of albenza (albendazole). it still itches sometime but doesn't hurt to pew anymore. is this normal?

Need 2nd dose: You should take a second dose 7 days after the first dose to kill newly hatched.  Take the second dose as soon as you can for a complete treatment.
