Both are safe: Anti-reflux measures such as raising the head of the bed, avoiding tight clothing or belts, avoiding eating late at night and not lying down shortly after mealtime and achieving weight loss are great treatments. Avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatories, caffeine, peppermints, alcohol and tobacco. 
Both Zantac (ranitidine) and Omeprazole are safe to use daily.

Same: There are no major differences between those two medicines.  Both are about equally effective.  If you take other medicines you should check with a pharmacist or your doctor to make sure there isn't an interaction.

Safety of Zantac (ranitidine): I believe you are taking  forsymptoms arising from acid  in the stomach.  Long term stomach acid suppression is needed to suppress symptoms arising from  it or due to history of stomach ulcers., although more effective medicines  called as proton pump inhibitor  are available even over the counter sold as omeprazole.  Long term effects of acid suppression may include calcium and vit d deficiency.

Get re-checked. C MD: If you have chronic symptoms, and no longer getting relief from your usual meds, you need to get re-evaluated (assuming that you have been evaluated by a doc in the first place and have not just been self medicating).

Not likely: Shortness of breath is not a common side effect of Zantac (ranitidine).  If you are experiencing shortness of breath, you should contact your doctor right away, or be seen in an Urgent Care or ER.

GERD: Zantac or "ranitidine" is a good medication to treat GERD with and usually tolerated with little to no side effects.  I have multiple patients on long term therapy who have had no problems.

recently diagnosed with gastritis, prevacid worked for awhile but is no longer! no ins/doc, any advice...i have zantac 150, would that work? dosage?

Zantac : Try the Zantac that you have at home. Give it a week or two, if not better, then you can try nexium.

i have barretts. the length has increased from 1cm to 4 as i wasnt taking a ppi. no dysplasia. my gp has prescribed zantac as she doesnt like ppis long term. whats your opinion?

Reasonable thought: Zantac was the therapy for Barets prior to PPI developement. For ulcer improvement the benefit of PPI is they heal quicker. Zantac an  H2 has shown to bed helpful for Barrett"S .  Your GP is offering a proven therapy and given you will be on for awhile likely safer.
