how effective is a xolair shot?

Very Effective if...: used for treatment of allergic asthma and chronic idiopathic urticaria.(CIU)  The dosing for Asthma is based on your weight and blood level of IgE. for CIU  the dosing is either one injection of 150mg or 2 for a total of 300mg.

first xolair injection - what should i expect?

Nothing much: Xolair's effects are felt after 3 months usually, so don't expect much change in your asthma and keep taking the other medications as previously prescribed. It is now necessary to monitor a person for 2 hours after the first 3 injections in the office for anaphylactic reactions, in my experience, it rarely happens. Thereafter you should wait 30 minutes after each. Be patient, it will work.

can you exercise the same day that you get a xolair injection?

Accepted Answer

Yes: There is no reason why you cannot exercise with Xolair.  The only theoretical  precaution is that exercise may increase one's risk for a reaction should one develop an anaphylactic response to Xolair (must be very rare since I have never seen one). Thus a 2-hour wait may be considered.

Not usually: That isn't a common side effect of xolair, but post-marketing additional side effects do happen for new medications. Have you tested your first AM urine for pregnancy?

Not much-Anaphylaxis: Biggest is-warning for Anaphylaxis, But newer studies show that just having severe asthma puts you at a risk for anaphylaxis that is greater than the risk of Xolair. Also, the definition for anaphylaxis in the Xolair studies was very broad. Because of this,  they recommend you receive it in a doctors office and have injectable epinephrine available. Don't let that scare you. It's very effective.

Anaphylactic shock: The acute allergic reaction that rarely occurs after Xolair injection is called anaphylaxis, which can lead to low blood pressure ("Shock"). It is rare, and usually easy to treat if it does happen. That's why the injection should be supervised by the doctor who can treat you if by slim chance  you have this allergic reaction.

Helpful: Xolair is an antibody against ige the allergy antibody. In the appropriate patient xolair can be helpful.

Call your doctor: If you are having any problems with Xolair injections you should call your doctor. If you are having trouble breathing, throat swelling or feeling faint go to the ER immediately.

Unlikely: There may be breakthrough hives, but it is more likely that there won't be.  Many patients tolerate longer intervals between treatments. If you stop altogether, then the hives are expected to return (depending on their cause if known and how long you were treated prior to starting Xolair). Discuss with the prescribing physician. If a vacation is scheduled, also discuss plan for breakthrough hives
