Tonic clinic shaking: A full blown seizure from Xanax (alprazolam) withdrawal is not uncommon when doses at 3 mg daily or more are suddenly stopped. That is only 0.5 mg every four hours for a couple of weeks, then stopping it. The shaking, incontinence, loss of consciousness, and injuries from the seizure looks very similar to a seizure in someone with epilepsy, i.e. A grand mal seizure.

Ativan: I would take ativan instead but make sure it is equivalent dose. Follow up with your PCP soon in order to come up with a plan for continued management of anxiety.

Drug induced Seizure: Xanax (alprazolam) is very addictive and you can get dependent on it very quickly, need higher doses.  Eight weeks is a long time and withdrawal can cause unwanted responses. Stopping xanax (alprazolam) abruptly can cause a seizure.

took lexapro for 12 yrs, stop 3 yrs ago but need relief again. dr suggested zoloft, concerned about seizures. had 1 from xanax (alprazolam) withdrawal 17 yrs ago.

Zoloft (sertraline): is not associated with seizures.  Either use or stopping

Alcoholism: Although Xanax (alprazolam) has been prescribed to prevent seizures, Alcohol withdrawal should be managed by a physician. If there is concern for withdrawal seizures then there is concern for alcoholism and its many complications and it is in your best interest to discuss your concerned with your family physician.

would switching from xanax to gabapentin help reduce my pain further from fibromyalgia but also help with withdrawals from benzodiazapine to help avoid seizures? are they safe to take together in low doses otherwise?

Better off Xanax, be: It would be better to be off Xanax and benzodiazapine. You would be slowly tapered off. There are  bettr  ways to reat fibromyalgia - Gabapentin up to 1800 mg total a day, or lyrica up to 450 mg/day and duloxetine. You need to be re-evaluated

Xanax (alprazolam) withdrawal: Should be fine. You were only on it a short time and was using intermittent.

Speak to your doctor: If you have been prescribed Xanax by a physician, please speak with them regarding stopping the medication and the way you might be able to do this safely.  Not knowing your history or the rationale for being on the medication, it is difficult to provide a reasonable set of guidelines.
