getting upper wisdom teeth extracted under local anesthetic soon and wondering where i will feel the numbness? will it stay to just my tooth or will i feel it in my face? i'm scared of the feeling.

See a doctor: There are many possible etiologies of your symptoms including an atypical migraine, nerve entrapment or differing problems with your nerves.  Alternatively, cerebrovascular disease could also present like this.

What is the question: If your face was swollen and numb before the extractions then that should have started to heal after the extractions.  If you got swelling after the extractions then i would contact the oral surgeon that extracted the teeth.  If you did not see an oral surgeon then contact the dentist and good luck.

Wisdom teeth: I bet it is already getting better since the numbness is usually from the effects of a local anesthesia and they last from a few hours to a day. If it persists call your dentist.

Numbness: If the numbness last longer than 3 hours post op (id does  not go away) you need to return to the oral surgeon ASAP. Paresthesia may last 6 wks to 6 mos or be permanent. The sooner it is diagnosed the better the outcome and sometimes micro surgery is needed to reattach the two ends of the nerve if the nerve was severed. pinched/crushed nerves recover w/o surgery.

Two to 8 hours: Most common local anesthetic  used is Lidocaine with Epinephrine lasting 2 to 4 hours.  If a  longer acting anesthetic was used it could last 6- 8 yours.

It can vary: How long the numbness lasts can depend on whether or not any infection is present, postoperative swelling, as well as what type of local anesthetic was used.  In the lower jaw, we are always concerned about the close proximity of the roots of the wisdom teeth to the nerve that supplies sensations to the lower jaw.  A risk of nerve involvement in the lower jaw may prolong the numbness.
