The : The medications typically used for an epidural while in labor are anesthetics such as bupivicaine, chloroprocaine, and lidocaine. These are not in the barbituate or benzodiazepine families and would not show up on a drug test as such. Sometimes mothers are given a pain killer (narcotic) prior to or in the epidural which might show up on a drug test as an opioid, but that will be documented in the medical record.  There are other medications that could have been given to you in the benzodiazepine or barbituate classes for various reasons, so the best thing to do is ask!  if you have specific questions about the testing and whether any other prescribed medications could have shown up as barbituates or benzodiazepines in the drug screening, you should call your ob/gyne doctor.

Various reasons: Infants withdrawing from opiates have been treated with many types of drugs.  The best-with the least amount of complications is opium drops or phenobarbital. Benzodiazapines have been associated with respiratory complications and are not recommended. Abstinence syndrome is complicated and should be supervised by an experienced Neonatologist. Management may take some time so try to be patient.

Barbiturates/ benzos: The biggest difference between barbiturate and and a benzodiazepine  is the fact that the barbiturates lead to a much more rapid habituation and the withdrawal  can be very serious and they can be lethal at low doses. Benzodiazepines have all the same risks except that they are far less likely to be lethal and tolerance does not develop that quickly and in many patients not at all.

Similar effect: Both are calming agents.  However, they have a different mechanism of action.  The side effects of barbiturates are more dangerous than those of benzodiazepines.

Probably not: There's a reason benzodiazepines are so widely used: they work well, particularly for anxiety.  Sedating antihistamines like vistiril (hydroxyzine) are non-addictive & thus preferable if they do the job.  But the truth is, for most people benzodiazepines are more effective.  There are other alternatives, by the way: ssris, buspar, (buspirone) beta-blockers, & sedating antidepressants (trazodone, doxepin).

Yep.: Accupril (quinapril) is a ACE-inhibitor for high blood pressure.  Neurontin is a GABA analog use to treat nerve pain or seizures.  Vistaril is an anti-histamine for allergies or sedation.

Clarification: Both gabapentin and Cymbalta (duloxetine) have capacity to suppress "nerve" pain, but neither cures any of it. Yes both are safe and effective but both have adverse effects which may be an issue.  Vistaril is not of value here, but your amitriptyline is an older drug which can be effective at appropriate dosing.
