Vertigo: A spinning sensation typically lasting seconds, in response to certain changes in head position.  Fairly reproduceable and chronic in bppv. Typically a disease of the elderly.

Takes time: Bppv often requires multiple attempts with Epley maneuvers. Often a vibrating massager help over the mastoid during the maneuver helps.

BPPV: If bppv is mild, nystagmus may not be evident.  The "floor dropping sensation" you describe may be due to other causes, such a orthostatic hypotension, which is a transient drop in one's blood pressure upon getting up from a lying or sitting position.  Lying down would alleviate the sensation.

Unlikely, but: there may be no nystagmus between episodes, or nystagmus my be so subtle that it is hard to see.
