Not a good choice: Amoxcillin is not available as an eyedrop as it is painful and very likely to induce allergic response.  Other antibiotics are available for this purpose.  If the eyes of a 5 YO  appear infected, you should see a pediatric ophthalmologist right away.  Vision is too valuable to take chances with.

No help: Oral antibiotics such as Amoxicillin really won't help with pink eye.  Most of the time, pink eye is due to a virus.  Even if it's bacterial, it's better treated with antibiotic eye drops rather than a pill.

Hard to say: You have not provided the strength of the med (amoxicillin) or a clear reason why it was used . Proper dose is higher for things like an ear infection that it would be for a bladder infection.There is more than one strength of medicine available, so giving the amount without the strength does not give us enough info.

Super-infection: There can many times be a bacterial infection on top of a viral (herpes) infection.  This is called superinfection.  The antibiotic will help remove such possibility, but probably best to also include an antiviral treatment like Acyclovir along with that.

Monitor: The sound may be transmitted from the upper airway if he is congested, but expiratory sounds may also be associated with wheezing. If he is breathing normally and improving without fever, please see your pediatrician for follow up.
Provide clear liquids and treat fever. Nasal saline may be used to relieve congestion.

Very unusual: Although not impossible, hives from an eye drop is unusual since very little of the medicine gets absorbed in the body. Nonetheless, we should presume an allergy reaction & follow up with your pediatrician or allergist for additional testing. And to clarify, it would not be an allergy to antibiotics, but an allergy to quinolone antibiotics and Amoxicillin (although rash may also be a side effect.

No: Most "pinkeye" or conjunctivitis is actually viral, so antibiotics are usually not effective. Viral conjunctivitis tends to run it's course in 7-10 days. It can be very contagious, spreading from one eye to the other or to other people. Hand washing is essential. To be certain it is not a more serious bacterial or fungal infection, you should see an ophthalmologist.

Pink eye: Most pink eye is caused by Adenovirus and is very contagious. Sometimes the eye is infected with bacteria. Please see your primary care physician for treatment and/or referral to an ophthalmologist as needed as soon as possible. Do not share linens, towels, or wash cloths with anyone. Wash your hands frequently. Use warm compresses then 1.2 strength baby shampoo with water on Qtips to wash lids.
