will a punch biopsy with sutures leave any scarring?

Usually small scar: It really depends on how large a biopsy is taken. The smaller the punch the smaller the scar. Most punch biopsies will heal well but sometimes they will heal better if they are sutured close.

You : You will typically not need stitches  or have scar after a punch biopsy. The biopsy will be done using a small needle where a device to obtain the specimen will be inserted. It is a minimally invasive procedure and you will leave the hospital with a bandaid with minimal pain.

Why worry: In the hands of experienced  expert  professional the scar will be minimal  ( some times may not even see with naked eye )  See a plastic surgeon , or cosmetic dermatologist

Depends: On some individuals there is no scar. On others a thick scar (keloid) may develop. On some patients there is a flat area of decreased pigmented skin. The size of the scar will depend upon the size of the punch biopsy. It has been my experience that how one scars in the past is representative of how you may scar in the future.

Scar: It will heal by secondary intention and will have a scar even if there was a stitch.

Not related: A punch biopsy should not cause a headache. Stress from worrying it could cause a muscle tension headache.

Definitive diagnosis: If the dermatologist cannot diagnose your skin problem by looking at it, you need to have a tissue sample taken (biopsy) that will be examined by a pathologist to render a definitive diagnosis

Sometimes: Folliculitis is usually staph aureus. If you have recurrent painful boils and drainage, that is culture negative, your problem may be hidradenitis and not folliculitis.

i had a punch biopsy done on my calf , results were  clean, but i didn't go back to have the suture removed. what can i use to remove suture myself?

PCP: Go to your pcp and have him or her take it out.  It is hard to advice because I do not know how long the suture has been there and how the wound looks like.

Size and location...: A punch for doing punch biopsies has a round cutting surface.  They come in different sizes from 1mm to 6mm and up.  Its a quick way to take a vulvar biopsy.  But your doc can also use a scalpel or a pair of scissors to take a biopsy.  It really depends where the problem is and what is best for the circumstances.  A scalpel and stitches is usually used for larger biopsies.  Best wishes!
