Wrong assumption: Any antibiotic we could give an infant that age is okay for her to take when breast feeding. Contact her doc for guidance.

Two problems: These are likely not related. The foot numbness may be due to neuropathy, or a pinched nerve. For the thumb pain, sounds like it may be arthritis. Where in the thumb is the pain? Is it painful to touch all over or over a specific area? Loss of strength can be related to joint pain.
