Question Cut off: Reasons for missed /late periods: low body weight, obesity, marked weight gain or loss, over-exercise such as in endurance athletes, breast-feeding, stress, illness, eating disorders (bulimia or anorexia), travel, hormone irregularities, drug use, medications (i.e., birth control) or med problem (polycystic ovary syndrome or Asherman’s syndrome. #1 reason for missed period is pregnancy. HPT?

Unlikely pregnant: It should have been positive by now.  If it still doesn't come in a few days, try again or see your doctor for an examination.

Some thoughts...: In a woman with regular periods, some causes of a late period include: excessive weight loss or weight gain, increased exercising, emotional stress, having an illness, traveling, medicines (like birth control pills), hormonal imbalances, pregnancy, etc…  Sometimes a period is late for no apparent reason, but if symptoms become recurrent, one can visit her Ob-Gyn doctor for help.

Anovulation: Sometimes women will not ovulate and this causes a hormone imbalance which throws your cycle off. 

You may need a serum pregnancy test to be sure. I have occasionally had patients that the upt doesnt pick up but a quantitative test will. 

If negative still then your doctor can advice best approach. Usually, it will clear itself up after 3-4 cycles on its own. Occasionally you need medicine.

i use yaz contraceptives, my cycle has been regular, id get my period on the last active pill but not this time. i am 28 yrs.

Late period ?'s: If you were late starting a new pack of "Yaz", for example waiting after the placebo pills more than a few days, the "HPT" may be a false negative.  Obtain a serum HCG test to be certain. If negative, consult your gyn physician for other testing.

Menses: Hormonal irregularity can causes changes to menstrual cycle. It is possible that the spotting may be the start of a late period.

i have a 3x3cm right ovarian cyst and my period is 3 days late. my previous cycle was also 3 days longer than usual. my periods have always been regular till now. what could this mean?

If not pregnant: This could  be caused by insulin resistance/polycystic ovarian syndrome, or other issues affecting ovulation. If only happens one time, this could be just a normal variation, one time event. Your doctor is an important source of information, and further testing/treatment.

Not pregnant: When a period is late, and you're not pregnant, that means that you didn't ovulate, since ovulation is what brings on a period 14 days later.  If you wish to become pregnant, see your doctor, who can help you to ovulate in the future.

Pregnancy tests are very accurate by 3 weeks after sex.

Maybe not: Pregnancy is the most common cause of a late or missed period. If not pregnant, other causes of a late or missed period may be excessive weight loss or weight gain, increased exercising, emotional stress, having an illness, traveling, medicines (especially birth control pills), hormonal disorders, etc…  A visit to one’s Ob-Gyn doctor is helpful if symptoms are persistent, recurring, or worrisome.
