Unclear : If your thumb is swollen and not able to be bent you need to see your doctor. Did you fall on it.? Do you have some type of inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis. ? See your doctor as soon as possible and make sure you get it xrayed if not done already.

Several things can..: ...Cause a swollen thumb.  If you do not have a history of trauma, this list includes stenosing tenosynovits (trigger thumb), tendonitis, degenerative arthritis, gouty arthritis, rheumatologic conditions, and infection.  If the swelling last for more than a few days, i strongly urge you to see a board certified hand surgeon for a comprehensive evaluation.

Hard to tell: Mild swollen due to generalized fluid retention like in nephrotic syndrome, heart failure, end stage cirrhosis, severe malnutrition might not accompany pain. Trauma, infection and inflammation that cause swelling will cause pain. We need to see and do examination to answer your question. A local physician can help you with that.

Probbably tendonitis: overuse of tendons causeinflammation. Suggest icing the finger down, nonsteroidal antiinflammatories, and steroid injections or topical application can be helpful.

Many causes. : There are many potential causes and a good history and exam will helps to determine the answer. For example is this a tumor? Is it lymphatic or vascular congestion? Positional? Work related? Congenital? Constrictive due to ring wear? Due to bone, skin, fat, nerves, vessels?, etc.

R.I.C.E.: The best way to treat any swelling is rest, ice, compression and elevation. If the swelling is from an injury i would recommend and xray to make sure you do not have a fracture.
