why is my scalp tender?

Inflammation, infect: The area around the roots is inflammed by bacteria, fungus etc. Psoriasis, seborrhea, follicultis or other conditions can cause swelling in the scalp and tenderness. Since this may need antibiotics or other treatment see md if medicated shampoos don't help.

Shingles?: If this is new (a day or two), and if the tender area is only on one side of your scalp (i.e. tenderness stops at the midline and doesn't extend to the other side), be on the alert for red bumps that would soon turn to blisters and sores. It could be shingles, i.e. a localized recurrence of the chickenpox virus (if you weren't vaccinated and had chickenpox as a child.) See MD if any doubt.

While mild episodes of anxiety are common and do not usually require treatment, more severe forms can be chronic and debilitating. Symptoms of severe anxiety insomnia, chest pain, palpitations, tender scalp and parasthesia. Rec.: see your pcp for evaluation.

Monitor for change: If you feel a well defined lump and it is increasing in size then you need a medical check up. Otherwise you can examine yourself once weekly and note any change or further growth. An increase in size will require further evaluation by your doctor.
