why is it that a person should take hydrocortisone tablets with food or meals?

Stomach irritation: Hydrocortisone, or steroids in general, can be very irritating to the GI tract.  Taking them with food can minimize problems like nausea, heartburn, and stomach pain.

Yes: The children may have atopic dermatitis and even though there has been no food changes, food allergy can be acquired through direct skin contact if AD is the issue. Talk to your doctor and consider seeing an allergist.

i was using nair and some of it got on my inner labia and now its a little swollen. do i use hydrocortisone/creams/ aloe vera gel etc. if its close to vaginal opening? if so what? and are there foods that reduce swelling when eaten?

Should resolve: Most likely it will resolve on its own without any treatment. Food is not going to help it. If the area looks infected or like there is a chemical burn have an Obgyn examine the area.

ASAP: If you are taking it for your orthostatic tachycardia, take it ASAP and resume the regular schedule with the next dose even though it may be just a few hours apart.  Talk to your doctor if you experience any problem.

Absolutely: I am going to assume that your health is stable and that you are not thrombocytopenic. If you actually have petechiae, they always deserve to be worked up; you want to know whether you have a capillary fragility syndrome. In the US, we have food faddists who give themselves scurvy; I trust Australians are more sensible. Cortef (hydrocortisone) makes capillaries more fragile. I'd get specialist consultation.

Day or so: Cortizone (hydrocortisone) cream like all corticosteroids to become effective needs to be transported into the cytoplasm of the cell where it binds the steroid receptor. This is transported into nucleus  and binds to another receptor. This affects mrna which then makes specific proteins.  These proteins affect inflammatory mediators that leads to symptom improvement.  This process takes 6-8 hours.
