Chest pain: Pain with breathing is pleurisy. Many different causes and sometimes no clear reason why it is occurring. Forceful coughing can lead to pleuritic pain which can be unilateral or bilateral. Infections and musculoskeletal injuries can cause and mimic (respectively) pleuritic pain.

Musculoskeletal....: The discomfort you describe is likely musculoskeletal pain. The chest wall has bones, muscles, cartilage all of which is subject to muscle strain/sprain, cartilage inflammation and even rib bruise or fracture from excessive coughing. Once the cough is controlled, the musculoskeletal disorder(s) will also be controlled. So, see your doctor for diagnosis/treatment of the cough.

theres pain under the left side of my ribs n the upper quadrant its not rib pain its deeper & constant dull pain it hurts more when i bend 2that side or lay on it when i eat & when i breathe i get full fast my left shoulder hurts& when lifted.advice?

LUQ pain : May be related to gastritis, or could be pancreas or spleen or even from lung or colon or even ovary/uterus. Would get imaging Ultrasound/ CT of abdomen( sometimes you see stuff on U/S you dont see on CT) - make sure you are not pregnant first  and Follow up w/ MD. if it were the right side I would say gallbladder as shoulder pain is not uncommon but it is on the right not left.

Costochondritis?: Rib pain with breathing could be due to costochondritis, a rib-cartilage pain that is aggravated by movement. However, other more serious causes include pleuritic pain or heart issues. See your doctor to confirm the cause and to give you a treatment plan.

Rib pain: Alot depends on the type of pain ... Is it worse with movement or deep breath or brought on by exertion . See a doctor asap.

had terrible cough few weeks ago. coughed so badly i threw up .  worst cough ever. now left side of ribs hurt x 1 week. ice helps a bit.  muscular?

Possibly rib fx: Can be musucular but people with vigorous coughing can fracture ribs. Most broken ribs heal on their own within six weeks. Usually therapy is conservative with oral NSAIDs for pain. If very painful and do not have relief of pain can develop pneumonia and should seek physician's help.

: U have strained a muscle most likely. Or pulled your ribs at the junction with the breastbone(sternum).

Unlikely: It is unlikely for a healthy 23 year old to fracture ribs from vomiting. You may have strained your intercostal muscles or developed inflammation in your costal (rib) cartilage.  It is also possible you developed pleurisy (inflammation of the chest the area between your lungs and chest wall).  Try some anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen or naproxen.
